Menopause and weight gain

It is difficult to control weight after menopause because of hormonal changes.

Progesterone-During menopause progesterone levels decrease resulting in retention of water. It is responsible for the post menopausal symptoms like weight gain.

Androgen-Androgen levels increase with menopause. It adds on weight to the mid section of age during menopause. It increases the abdominal fat and is considered as common symptom for the start of the menopause.

Some other factors also contribute the weight gain in middle aged women.

  • After menopausal period i.e. after 40, insulin resistance can occur in women with low fat and high carbohydrate diet.
  • Stress also enhances the weight gain in middle aged women. Stress hormones can minimize weight loss in menopause.
