Sleep and Weight gain

Sleep hours is an indicator of weight gain of men and women. It is a tested fact that less hours of sleep could lead to gaining of body weight, obesity and related diseases. Studies have revealed that women with less than five hours of sleep weigh 2 ½ kg more than those having sleep for seven hours. Medical practitioners and dieticians are very particular about the sleeping habits of patients.

Less hours of sleep not only contributes to diabetes and heat ailments but also causes patients to gain weight. Though it has been found that people with less hours of sleep weigh more, it could not be confirmed that this lack of sleep is its cause. Taking other factors like smoking, medication, alcohol intake, and caffeine consumption habits into consideration, individuals with less than 5 hours of sleep have 33% tendency of gaining weight. Out of them around 15% are likely to become obese over a period of 16 years.

Sleep weight gain could be a result of less exercise during waking hours as individuals remain too tired for moderate amount of physical activity. Sleeping deprivation causes changes in a human being’s basic metabolic activity resulting in weight gain. How to gain weight is not much of a worry as how to lose it for middle aged and elderly people.
